With Symantec and McAfee in its sights, Microsoft last week announced it will release its much-anticipated desktop security software—currently dubbed Microsoft Client Protection—into beta-testing later this year.

The combined antivirus, antimalware and antispyware product, developed under the code name Jamaica, is expected to be renamed and released in 2006, though Microsoft acknowledged that ship date it could slip.

Congress on Friday declared October "National Cyber Security Awareness Month" as a not-for-profit group composed of government agencies and big-name technology firms geared up for a long-term campaign to ease growing consumer fears of the Internet.

Nokia Inc. has signed an agreement to use Symantec Corp.'s mobile security software in the handset maker's Series 60 advanced cellular phone, both companies said Wednesday.
Under the agreement, the Finnish manufacturer will preload Series 60 phones that run the Symbian operating system with the Symantec anti-virus software.

"Nokia is determined to be active in the development of security controls and preventive measures against malware," Matti Vänskä, director of Nokia technology platforms, said in a statement.

Identity management is crucial to protect public and private sectors alike, and requires the cooperation and expertise of both to be achieved, said Gurvais Grigg, unit chief in the counterterrorism division of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

EarthLink Inc. on Tuesday released a suite of security tools to help protect subscribers' computers.
The Protection Control Center includes anti-virus software, a spyware blocker and a firewall, officials with the Atlanta-based Internet service provider said.

The software suite integrates the individual security tools for faster scanning of a PC. The suite also allows subscribers to make applications or cookies exempt from being scanned or removed.

Internet Security Systems on Monday launched a managed security service that helps customers assess vulnerabilities and prioritize remediation procedures.

ISS’ new Vulnerability Management Service extends the company’s previous threat scanning service by placing “drones” inside customer networks, said John Wheeler, director of deployment and integration at the Atlanta-based vendor. “ISS has been providing remote scanning services, but it has been a view from the outside,” he said. “Now we have both internal and external views.”

Symantec kept up its buying spree Monday as it announced the planned purchase of Houston, Texas-based BindView Development for $209 million in cash.
Just over a week ago, Symantec said it would buy Austin, Tex.-based WholeSecurity, a 60-employee maker of anti-phishing and intrusion prevention software, for an undisclosed amount.

BindView is a bigger fish, with more than 500 employees and expected revenues in the third quarter of $17.7 to $18.1 million. Its technology, which Symantec characterized as agentless security policy
