Mozilla Corp. has released the second, and last, beta of Thunderbird 1.5, the next major update of the company's competitor to Microsoft's Outlook e-mail client.

IBM is no longer using its massive patent portfolio to defend itself against The SCO Group in the companies' two year-old legal dispute, according to court documents filed last week in a U.S. District Court in Utah.
In the documents, IBM agreed to drop its patent infringement claims in an effort to hasten the outcome of the case. IBM had brought the patent claims against SCO in August 2003 as part of a countersuit against the Lindon, Utah, software vendor.

Oracle scooped up another small technology company on Friday, announcing its acquisition of Finnish open-source database technology developer Innobase. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Innobase, based in Helsinki, is the creator of InnoDB, an add-on storage engine for MySQL. InnoDB is distributed under the GNU GPL (General Public License) open-source license. Mozilla Corp. released the second beta of its next browser, Firefox 1.5, Friday to testers and developers.
Although there are no new features included in Beta 2, Mozilla said the follow-up to September's Beta 1 includes improvements in the automatic update system, performance and site rendering enhancements, and fixes for several security problems. A Chinese software vendor has won a contract to deliver one of the nation's biggest     Linux deployments to date, including more than 140,000 desktop PCs.

Dell has added to its Dimension line of PCs a computer that ships with a blank hard drive and a copy of the minimal open-source system FreeDOS.
The operating system shipping on the Dimension E510n is an open-source version of MS-DOS that buyers can use as a tool for subsequently installing any operating system they want, according to Dell spokesperson Liem Nguyen.

The community marketing site for the Mozilla Foundation's open-source browser Firefox has been hacked, just months after a similar breach occurred.
SpreadFirefox, the official site for promoting the browser, is currently shut down, with a message on the page directing visitors to Getfirefox.com, where they can download the latest version of Firefox.

The Mozilla Foundation has temporarily pulled the plug on its SpreadFirefox.com marketing site after a hacker break-in put user accounts at risk.

The non-profit Foundation, which has used the site to launch grassroots campaigns to support the Firefox Web browser, said the site will remain offline until October 15 while the site is rebuilt from scratch.

Hewlett-Packard Co. on Monday said it has agreed to acquire privately held RLX Technologies Inc., and plans to add the smaller company's     Linux-based management software to HP products. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The acquisition, which is expected to close in 30 days, would enable HP to deliver better management technology for Linux on blade server environments, the Palo Alto, Calif., company said. RLX, headquartered in Spring, Texas, has 36 employees and about 200 customers.

For the second time in three months, a security breach has shut down the marketing Web site used to promote the Firefox browser. Members of the Spread Firefox community have learned that their Spreadfirefox.com site was hit by attackers looking to exploit a bug in the TWiki collaboration software that had been running on the server.

RealNetworks has patched the Linux media players that were susceptible to a zero-day attack for much of last week.

The Sun Microsystems-led NetBeans developer community this week released a beta version of the NetBeans 5.0 open source IDE, with enhancements for client development based on Java.
