MANHASSET, N.Y. — CDMA technology supplier Qualcomm Inc. posted earnings of $538 million, or 32 cents per share on sales of $1.56 billion in its fourth fiscal 2005 quarter ended Sept. 25, compared to earnings of $560 million, or 33 cents per share on sales of $1.36 billion in the previous quarter.

At Forum 2005 in Washington this week, Sun Microsystems is launching a new enterprise tape drive with data encryption.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company, however, won’t be taking advantage of that stage to shed some light on its storage plans in the wake of its integration of StorageTek. For the past 16 years, the Forum event was StorageTek's annual user conference.

The wireless LAN (WLAN) market will grow at an annual rate of 30 percent per year, and will hit $5 billion next year, according to a new report by Research and Markets. The report also found that WLAN sales have increased 60 percent compared to last year.

Home and small office wireless networks are primarily driving the growth, with a projected growth rate of 103 percent, the report says. Wireless sales to enterprises are expected to grow by 32 percent.

Mobile telecommunications giant Nokia will supply broadband infrastructure to build and support Canada’s TELUS next-generation IP broadband access network, the firm said Tuesday.

Nokia said TELUS has picked Nokia’s D500 IP DSLAM multiservice platform for its next IP network.

Jetstream Media Technologies has joined the intellectual property (IP) plug-and-play standards organization Open Core Protocol International Partnership (OCP-IP), the organization said Tuesday (Nov. 1).

Hewlett-Packard said Wednesday that it is laying off employees in its Colorado Springs, Colo., direct-marketing call center as part of a broader workforce reduction.

An HP spokeswoman confirmed reports from channel sources that the Palo Alto, Calif.-based IT giant plans to restructure its call center operations. She said there would be layoffs in HP’s call center but declined to specify the number of employees involved.

WLAN equipment vendor Netgear said Tuesday that it has released a gateway based on Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) technology that incorporates five separate functions.

IBM has announced a new Substation Automation and Integration Project with the Michigan Electric Transmission Company.

IBM said the arrangement, finalized last week, will improve reliability, system maintenance and workforce efficiency. The company also said its Intelligent Electricity Network will help prevent massive blackouts like the one that hit New York City and other parts of the Northeast in August 2003, while helping METC meet reliability standards imposed by the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005.

Federal regulators approved SBC Communications' takeover of AT&T and Verizon Communications' purchase of MCI Monday in a move consumer activists called anticompetitive.

By 4-0 votes, the Federal Communications Commission approved a compromise adding several conditions - but also removing the last regulatory barriers - to the multibillion-dollar mergers.
