Oslo-based browser maker Opera has issued denials of a buyout, in the midst of persistent rumors that Microsoft and Google have both targeted the company for acquisition.

Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc. (TBS), Japan's third-biggest TV broadcaster, said on Monday it will form a joint venture with mobile content provider Index Corp. and others to air TV programs over the Internet.
The move, first reported by media last month, is the latest between Japan's Internet companies and TV broadcasters, many of which have become takeover targets as Internet firms seek to use advances in communications technology to deliver content via the Web.

Japan's Ministry of Finance said on Monday it will auction off modern gold coins from its collection through the Internet next February.
Some 2,445 coins will be sold on a Yahoo Japan Corp. site from February 3-19, the ministry said.

The MOF holds some 32,683 modern gold coins, which it plans to sell off by March 2008. A floor auction in October sold 1,037 coins, reaping some 561.82 million yen ($4.83 million).

The National Security Agency has conducted much broader surveillance of e-mails and phone calls — without court orders — than the Bush administration has acknowledged, The New York Times reported on its Web site.
The NSA, with help from American telecommunications companies, obtained access to streams of domestic and international communications, said the Times in the report late Friday, citing unidentified current and former government officials.

NBC Universal said on Friday it bought control of cable channel MSNBC, unraveling a joint venture with Microsoft Corp. as the software giant continues to shift from content production.
Under the agreement, NBC Universal has increased its stake in the cable channel to 82 percent with an option to buy the remaining 18 percent from Microsoft within two years, according to a network executive familiar with the deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

PARIS - A French government crackdown on digital piracy backfired Thursday as lawmakers rebelled by endorsing amendments to legalize the online sharing of music and movies instead of punishing it.

America Online has begun testing an AOL toolbar for the Firefox browser and a version of its Web-mail service that features an integrated calendar.
AOL's Web mail service, available to AOL paying subscribers and to users of its free AIM instant messaging service, is being integrated with AOL Calendar, says an AOL spokesperson.

Previously reserved for AOL subscribers, the stand-alone service AOL Calendar is now also available to AIM users on the Web.

Thanks to the Internet and television, poker exploded outside its U.S. homeland in 2005, and PartyGaming Chief Executive Richard Segal sees technology boosting that boom further in 2006.
Internet poker took a firm hold in 2005, sparking three big London stock market flotations, generating revenues of around $2 billion and launching games and books that are now topping Christmas lists around Europe.
