Peterborough, N.H. - Ultrahigh-definition streaming media sent around the world via gigabit optical networks highlighted the capabilities of emerging scientific networks at last month's iGrid 2005 workshop.

In the workshop, held at the University of California, San Diego's Calit2 facility Sept. 26 to 29, NTT Labs technology demonstrated for the first time how it compresses and decompresses streams of between 6 Gbits and 4 Mbits/second for network transmission.

IBM will upgrade its SMB Express portfolio this week, rolling out a slew of managed services and targeted vertical solutions for smaller customers.

IBM said the move is designed to give smaller businesses access to the sorts of capabilities currently deployed in enterprise accounts.

“The whole goal is to provide enterprise capabilities but without the complexities and at a price and function that [SMB] accounts] can consume,” said Elaine Case, IBM’s director of SMB marketing.

Xerox on Monday said it’s adding a new color printer and three new multifunction systems to its Phaser lineup, with the color printer priced to compete directly with rival Hewlett-Packard.

LONDON — Optical chip and module specialist Princeton Lightwave has licensed IBM’s single-photon detection (SPD) technology for use in an avalanche photodiode it is developing for single-photon counting devices targeted at qantum cryptography systems.
An SPD is an essential component of quantum cryptography systems, which enable extremely secure communications even in the presence of eavesdropping. Single-photon detectors are also used in optical and semiconductor test and measurement applications.

Advanced Micro Devices last month rolled out a series of standardized desktop and notebook platforms to help system builders better tap the corporate, government and education markets.

Gateway has disbanded its group focused on direct marketer resellers (DMRs) such as CDW, reinforcing its strategy of working with solution providers to build its commercial business.

CDW, Zones and other direct marketers that have been selling Gateway products will no longer carry inventory or fixed SKUs. Hewlett-Packard this week will announce that its Smart Office SMB portfolio will now include data backup and recovery solutions. It also will unveil new networking collaboration with Cisco Systems.

LONDON — U.S.-based manufacturers will account for 50 percent of the global front-end wafer processing market this year, according to just published data from market research group The Information Network.

IBM is leading the vendor market in China and India, according to IDC's second-quarter tracking.
The company said Thursday that IBM held 44.3 percent of the overall server customer revenue in China, says a report from IDC.

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Wireless and broadband semiconductor supplier Broadcom Corp. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Athena Semiconductors Inc., a fabless semiconductor company that specializes in the design and development of mobile digital television tuner and low-power Wi-Fi technology.

SEOUL, South Korea — Korean memory makers see an “infinite” demand for NAND-based flash chips amid a sudden and dramatic change in the design landscape for cellphones, MP3 players, USB drives and other products.
Hynix Semiconductor Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. are separately developing and shipping a new class of NAND-based flash parts, claiming the devices can replace rival NOR-oriented technology in handsets and the lowly disk-drive in MP3 players.
