Korea's KT Tuesday launched wireless broadband service using technology that is closely related to WiMAX.
The company said that it has launched service using WiBro technology, which is very similar to WiMAX and is mobile. Mobile WiMAX isn't expected in pre-standard form until the middle of next year. Representatives of the WiMAX Forum trade group were on hand for the launch.
"KT represents a company that has pushed ahead and launched the world's first mobile broadband network that is based on the soon-to-be-ratified IEEE 802.16e standard, which is at the core of mobile WiMAX,"WiMAX Forum President Ron Resnick said at the launch. "KT's WiBro services provide an early glimpse to what is possible and that mobile WiMAX will be the technology to deliver personal broadband to consumers around the globe."
During the launch event, KT showed a number of applications such as two-way video, mobile VoIP and messaging.
