IBM, Sony and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. are releasing new software components and documentation for cell processors.
The companies announced Wednesday that the resources, for Cell Broadband Engine Architecture technology, would be available on the developerWorks forum and through the University of Barcelona.

IBM, Sony and Toshiba are hoping the wide release accelerates software development. Masakazu Suzuoki, deputy senior vice president of the Semiconductor Development Division of SCEI, said through a prepared statement that the efforts will support the PlayStation and digital consumer electronics businesses.

IBM is distributing source patches for Linux. They include run-time programming interfaces to manage and use the cell processor's synergistic elements. The cell processor Linux Reference Implementation Application Binary Interface Specification, V1.0 has also been published. The Sony Group has distributed gcc and binutils code as well.

A software development kit provides a system simulator, a software sample and library, a prototype compiler and a programming library released under an open source license.

IBM also launched a new section on alphaWorks to attract more talent to the task of improving the technology.
