NewsGator Technologies Inc. on Tuesday said it has acquired NetNewsWire, an RSS newsreader for the Mac OS X.
NewsGator, based in San Francisco, plans to integrate NetNewsWire into its own RSS platform. Brent, Simmons, creator of NetNewsWire, will work for NewsGator as a product architect.
The NewsGator Online platform aggregates and synchronizes RSS feeds for viewing on the Web, mobile phones, televisions and email clients, such as Microsoft Outlook. Among the company's recent acquisitions is the FeedDemon newsreader for the Windows desktop.
"Many of our online customers who are Mac users have asked if we had plans to extend our product platform to the Mac desktop," Greg Reinacker, founder and chief technology officer for NewsGator, said in a statement. "NetNewsWire is the dominant RSS application for the Mac OS, and was an obvious choice for us."
NetNewsWire, first released in 2002, is available in free and paid versions, both of which will continue to be offered, NewsGator said.
As part of the latest deal, existing NetNewsWire full-version customers will receive a 2-year paid subscription to NewsGator Online at no additional charge. More details will be announced with the next release of NetNewsWire, which will include features from NewsGator Online, the company said.
