The rush to deploy WiMAX gained momentum Tuesday with the announcement by Xilinx of a suite of programmable solutions designed to speed product design for the emerging wide-area wireless standard.
Included in the brace of products are a Mini-PCI reference design, a Forward Error Correction (FEC) IP bundle, and online design resources. The firm said its suite of application-specific IP FECs offers quick implementation of WiMAX using the Xilinx Virtex-4 and Spartan-3 FPGA families.
Programmability of WiMAX products is important because the WiMAX Forum is still in the process of establishing standards and specifications for the wide-range wireless technology. WiMAX is expected to begin to be widely deployed next year.
"For an emerging standard that will surely evolve over the coming months and years, rapid reprogrammability is essential," said Robert Bielby, Xilinx' senior director of vertical markets and partnerships, in a statement. "Our solutions leverage our extensive experience and leadership in other wireless areas." Xilinx has long been a pacesetter in developing products for wireless infrastructure protocols including 802.11, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA, and TD-SCDMA.
