SAN FRANCISCO — Claiming an industry first, Cypress Semiconductor Corp. Wednesday (Oct. 19) introduced an industrial-temperature-grade USB 2.0 programmable microcontroller.
Cypress (San Jose, Calif.) said it now offers its EZ-USB FX2LP controller with a temperature rating of -40 degrees Celsius to105 degrees Celsius, providing what the company called an "ideal solution" for implementing high-speed USB in industrial, automotive and military applications.
The EZ-USB FX2LP device is a fully integrated peripheral controller, including an 8051 microprocessor, a serial interface engine, a high-speed USB 2.0 transceiver, on-chip RAM and FIFO and a general programmable interface, Cypress said.
"Our EZ-USB LP family has been exceptionally well-received in applications such as mobile phones, PMPs, and Flash 'thumb drives.' We've now shipped more than 9 million units since our introduction in April of this year," said Rajiv Nema, product marketing manager for EZ-USB LP products, in a statement. "With the introduction of the industrial temperature offering, we now address a new set of market segments that can take advantage of EZ-USB LP's low power, high performance and flexibility."
Cypress said the new industrial-temperature EZ-USB FX2LP (CY7C68013A) devices are USB-IF certified and in full production. The device is offered in 100- and 128-pin TQFP and 56-pin QFN and SSOP packages, the company said, with pricing in 10,000-unit quantities starting at $8.95 each. Cypress also offers the CY3684 EZ-USB FX2LP development kit to facilitate the design process and speed time-to-market.
