AMD tops Intel in desktop MPU market

Posted by inet - 2005-10-14

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) captured 52 percent of the U.S. retail desktop market for microprocessors in the month of September, beating Intel Corp. by 6 percentage points, according to a report from market researcher Current Analysis.
AMD’s performance during the back-to-school shopping season topped chip giant Intel, which had a 46 percent share of the U.S. retail desktop market, according to the firm.

“Despite its past successes in surpassing Intel desktop sales in select retail sales weeks, September 2005 marked the first time AMD was able to outperform Intel for an entire month,” according to the researcher.

Directly contributing to AMD’s success was the rise in popularity of media center PCs. In September, media center PCs accounted for 46 percent of all U.S. retail desktop sales. Of those sales, 55 percent included an AMD-based processor, according to the firm.

The star system of the media center movement and AMD’s success was Hewlett-Packard Co.’s Pavilion a1130n. Running Microsoft’s Media Center OS and offering a 64-bit AMD Athlon 64 processor, the system sells for a post-rebate price of $679.

Propelled by its microprocessor business, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) smashed Wall Street’s expectations by reporting sales of $1.523 billion and net income of $76 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, for the third quarter
