Nortel reported that it has successfully tested 7.2 Mbps HSDPA mobile data calls using Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem MSM6280 combined with Nortel's HSDPA network equipment.
In reporting the tests Friday, Nortel said the calls covered frequencies in commercially available UMTS spectrum currently in use by mobile operators globally. The spectrum includes 2100MHz in use in European 3G networks, and 850MHz spectrum in North America, the Caribbean and Latin America. Nortel said it also expects the 900MHz spectrum to eventually be used for HSDPA in Europe.
Nortel noted that HSDPA can boost data transmission network capacity by as much as a factor of four while at the same time enabling twice as many wireless subscribers to use a cell site compared as they can currently with UMTS nets.
