Intel brings 'community PC' to Mexico

Posted by iNext - 2006-04-03

Intel Corp. on Friday (March 31) announced its so-called "Discover the PC" initiative in an effort to propel the computer in developing nations.

As part of the initiative, Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini introduced in Mexico a low-cost desktop PC platform available to first time computer users. Intel and Telmex will collaborate to expand the use of technology in Mexico by making a new type of desktop PC available to first-time computer users.

A second product that is part of the “Discover the PC” initiative was introduced earlier this week in India as the Intel-powered “community PC.”

Intel plans to make the low-cost PCs available through government agencies and telecommunications companies in Mexico, Brazil, Egypt, Ghana and Nigeria, with expansion to other countries later in the year.

The chip giant is apparently responding to a competing effort in the market. The U.N. is endorsing an idea for a hand-cranked $100 laptop computer to be issued to millions of schoolchildren around the globe.

A prototype of the laptop has been specified at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
