TOKYO — Sony Electronics said it will launch its first Blu-ray Disc player, BDP-S1, in July in North America for about $1,000.
A Vaio desktop computer and notebook with built-in Blu-ray Disc recordable drives will follow almost immediately along with recordable and rewritable disks. An internal PC drive will also be introduced this year.
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said this week that introduction of Playstation 3 would be delayed until November, mainly due to the delayed BD format.
Licensing for version 1.0 of the BD-ROM began on Feb. 3. Licensing of copy protection technology began Feb. 21.
Samsung Electronics will introduce its first Blu-ray player, BD-P1000, on May 23.
Toshiba plans to introduce the first HD-DVD player this month.
