Symantec Launches New Training and Certification Program

Posted by iTech - 2005-10-11

Symantec today launched the Symantec Certified Technical Specialist, Small Business Security program. The program includes online and printed training materials as well as certification testing to help resellers and small business IT managers understand and manage information security better.

According to the Small Business Technology Institute's July 2005 Small Business Information Security Readiness study, which was sponsored by Symantec, small businesses are growing more vulnerable to information security threats as they adopt increasingly complex IT infrastructures and processes that expose information security gaps. Of the more than 1,000 small businesses surveyed, 20 percent have yet to implement virus scanning on their email systems, and 75 percent have not done any form of security planning.

The Symantec Certified Technical Specialist, Small Business Security certification designates Symantec partners who have demonstrated in-depth product knowledge and implementation proficiency with Symantec Anti-Virus and Symantec Client Security. The associated training materials cover exam objectives, sample questions, and product documentation and are available online to registered Symantec partners via Symantec's PartnerNet and the Partner Learning Center, along with other materials designed to help partners better support small businesses' information security needs.

"The SMB world is very different from the world of the Fortune 1000," said Luis M. Alvarez, president and CEO of the Alvarez Technology Group Inc., and participant in the certification beta program. "Most of their security needs are more akin to the typical home user than to the CFO executive who needs VPN access to the corporate intranet. Their money is more valuable to them and so they tend to part with it only when they absolutely have to, so the risk analysis equation is much different." The problem is that small companies find it hard to distinguish which companies are qualified to help them with their security needs. "The SCTS certification for us and our engineers is a clear differentiator, not just because it's another logo to add to our collection, but because of the training it forces us to go through to pass the test; you have to know the products very very well."

Symantec Press has also published the Symantec Certified Technical Specialist, Small Business Security Study Guide, providing small business IT administrators with detailed course material to help them improve their organizations' security posture and prepare for the exam. The book is available for purchase on www.awprofessional.com and www.amazon.com.
