TOKYO — Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. will provide broadband wireless access equipment that Soma Networks Inc. will supply to caymanone, a Caribbean operator.
Soma and Sanyo made a contract for the joint development of Soma’s SoftAir broadband wireless access system in 2004, and started field tests jointly in May.
"Sanyo developed dedicated LSIs and designed antenna exclusively for the SoftAir system to make the system compact with higher performance," said a Sanyo spokesman.
SoftAir is a wireless local loop system covering a radius of 5 km and enables communications at transfer rate of 12 Mbps. It features independent voice and data channels, enabling users to talk on the phone while sending out data.
The systems was proposed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) last May as a candidate for Japan’s next generation wireless broadband system. The companies are also seeking to sell the system in North America, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia.
