KDE Upgrades Its Linux Graphical Desktop

Posted by iMark - 2005-12-02

The KDE Project on Tuesday released the newest version of the popular KDE graphical desktop for Linux, KDE 3.5, with improvements to the bundled Konqueror browser and a new-found ability to handle widget-style applications.

Konqueror now passes the Acid2 Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) test, the second browser to do so. (Apple's Safari, which uses Konqueror's rendering engine, was the first.) The free browser also now includes an ad-block tool to filter Web page advertisements.

On the desktop, KDE now includes SuperKaramba, a tool that lets users and developers create small interactive applications, typically called "widgets," that pull specific data from the Internet. Common widgets range from weather updates to new RSS feeds. The open-source desktop can be downloaded from the Project's site in compiled versions for Arch Linux, Kubuntu, Slackware, and SuSE Linux.

KDE was last updated in March of this year.
