The lackluster hard disk drive (HDD) market will receive a shot in the arm from the booming small form factor and Mobile PC HDD segments driving worldwide HDD semiconductor markets to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.6 percent to 2009, according to research firm IDC.
In a report release Tuesday, IDC said the small form factor HDD segment has a 39.4 percent CAGR over the same period. By 2009, the market research firm expects almost 25 percent of the market will be represented by small form factor HDD chip revenue.
"It is critical for HDD semiconductor suppliers to become mindful of end demand as volatile consumer markets grow to drive more and more HDD unit shipments," said Shane Rau, program manager, IDC PC and Storage Semiconductors, in a statement.
The high tech market research firm also predicted that perpendicular recording technology will catch on increasingly over the forecast period.
