Verizon Sues Alleged Wireless Spammers

Posted by iNext - 2005-11-24

Verizon Wireless said Wednesday that it has sued a Florida company for sending almost 100,000 unsolicited text messages.

The company said it filed the suit in federal court against Passport Holidays of Ormond Beach, Florida. The messages supposedly told Verizon's customers they had won a cruise and that they should call a provided number to claim their prize.

In addition, Verizon said in a statement that it sued "currently unknown individuals" who helped Passport Holidays send the spam. The cellular operator claims that the actions violate the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act because the defendants used "auto-dial" equipment to send the messages to a sequence of phone numbers in a short time.

Verizon Wireless said its lawsuit also claims the defendants too measures to hide the identity of the sender and to avoid the operator's spam filters. The operator recently filed two law suits against private investigation firms alleging they use fraudulent means to acquire customer information from Verizon Wireless.
