Convenience Store Chain Becomes 'Virtual' Cellco

Posted by iNext - 2005-11-23

Circle K, which operates convenience store/gas stations in the U.S., became the latest mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), offering low-cost phones with pre-paid service.

The Nokia phones, which will be available at the company's 2100 locations, will come with pre-paid service costing $.20 a minute for nationwide coverage in the U.S. Refills will be available in $25, $50, $75 and $100 amounts, the company said in a statement.

If refills are purchased within 120 days, unused minutes carry over. No contracts will be required for the service, which is called Talk-and-Go Mobile, the company said in a statement. It said that it is aiming the service at two groups of users.

"The Talk-and-Go Mobile program was developed with the needs of today's budget-conscious consumer in mind who is seeking an easy to understand wireless program," David O'Toole, Circle K's manager of telecom services, said in a statement. "We believe Talk-and-Go Mobile will also be a favorite choice for parents because it helps them control how much their children can spend."
