Alvarion said Wednesday its BreezeACCESS VL mobile network equipment is slated to be deployed in several major cities in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido following the successful deployment of Alvarion gear in the town of Koshimizu.
The WiMAX wide area wireless gear will be installed in the 4.9GHz spectrum band, Alvarion said
An earlier deployment in the 2.4GHz band was unsuccessful so the company moved to the higher band. Alvarion said it is working with local Japanese businesses to install the gear.
In a announcement with Alvarion partners Hokkaido STS, the latter company’s president Yasumasa Ito said: “Several other major cities in Hokkaido have contacted us to understand how they could take advantage of the system, and we are now following through on deployments and plans with each of them.”
Alvarion said thousands of additional Alvarion CPEs (customer premises equipment) are planned for deployment throughout Hokkaido Island.
